Katherine Hogan Architects is a hybrid architectural studio located in Raleigh, North Carolina between three expanding cities, a few universities, many research campuses and a lot of land. More than half of our work consists of ground up projects rooted in the situation of open spaces at suburban edges. The other half is discovering design opportunities in existing conditions.

Our approach to design expands the role of the architect. We focus on a few select projects, to realize our client’s vision and strive for authentic work. We lead as the architects, the contractors, the owners and, at times, the developers. The ambiguity of these roles challenges a more traditional methodology, and flexibility allows us to have a greater impact in our place. Participating in each of these roles has helped to clearly communicate the parameters and be empathetic to each of the team members’ perspectives. This builds immediate trust and an inclusive process to discover the design opportunities.

Our firm has crafted a diverse body of work in a variety of typologies. The award-winning portfolio of buildings creates a fresh, distinctive approach to design, one that balances culture, craft, making and implementation of architecture. Our projects are recognized for using ordinary materials in inventive ways and meeting high design goals with creative solutions that are of minimal means.

Our early work of small commercial and residential projects utilized design-build as a method of delivery. This provided many empirical insights from the field and shaped our design instincts. These experiences have supported unyielding explorations into assembly, tectonic craft, and resourcefulness, that are now integrated into our public and larger scale projects. The current work includes county public schools, public universities, state parks, non-profits and one or two houses each year.

We have been shaped by our place. The practice and the values have survived only because of the expanded role of the architect, which in turn has supported a focus on quality architectural experiences with a larger impact. Across the portfolio all projects are rooted in the situation – site, budget, materials, and community- but the common thread is consistently a belief that architecture enriches everyday experiences.
