Project Description

Farm Workers Housing

Farmworker communities face hardships such as poor housing, long hours, extreme weather conditions, and food insecurity. Student Action with Farmworkers (SAF) brings students and farmworkers together to improve conditions for farmworkers, and build diverse coalitions working for social change. Funded by a 2021 AIA SPD Grant, SAF along with Katherine Hogan Architects led a series of participatory design workshops with migrant farmworkers employed by the Gaia Herbs company in Transylvania County. The workshops were a forum for insights that are not typically engaged in for this project type. The process directly informed the development of housing for the workers on site based on their feedback and participation. In October 2022, SAF received a grant to fund all project soft costs, from the Dogwood Trust of Western NC.
