Brassfield Elementary

After 34 years of use, Brassfield Elementary School was selected as a prototype renovation project for the Wake County public schools. Instead of tearing down the building and constructing a new school to serve 600 students, this sustainable approach uses the same tax-payer funds to renovate and upgrade four schools that impact 2400 students. The construction timeframe was limited to 6 months and the code path limited to Alteration level one – no new walls or openings. This restriction focused our team to design the reflected ceiling plane using standard construction materials and paint while creating an entirely new school environment. The project was generated by a slab settlement issue due to water infiltration. After the slabs were repaired, all finishes were upgraded to exceed the County standards, spaces were painted and refreshed, new lighting installed, and ductwork cleaned throughout to increase energy efficiency and the overall building Air Quality.
